CAPT Responding to Trauma using Play Therapy Certificate

Certificate Overview:

 New information on trauma enables us to understand its implications in a way that was not possible a decade ago.  Both short term and longer treatment require an innovative approach. Play Therapy’s innate flexibility makes it an excellent resource for many developmental levels.

In this Certificate program we will examine creative and neuroscientific methods for understanding and responding to trauma.  Recent research also reminds us that the risk of vicarious trauma is very real and as therapists we need to be proactive about our own wellbeing.

Certificate Program Objectives:

We will use recent research as a guide to:

• Explore the effects of trauma on the brain
• Become familiar with the body response to trauma
• Identify trauma response behaviours
• Begin to understand the long-term effects of trauma across the lifespan.
• Examine loss and bereavement
• Distinguish between trauma debriefing and trauma therapy
• Become familiar with both short and long-term treatment approaches, with a focus on play therapy
• Explore the role of art therapy, play therapy and animal assisted therapy
• Identify the power of symbol and metaphor (inherent in play therapy) in communication and the therapeutic process
• Explain directive play therapy and its use in trauma debriefing
• Examine the risks of vicarious trauma for psychotherapists and strategize for safety of both client and therapist.
